Lenses
If your spectacle frames make a statement about you and your world, then your lenses should make a statement about how you see it.
Almost everybody will need prescription glasses at some time in their life. If you are lucky enough to escape them for distance wear, you will eventually require some help with close work around your mid forties.
The strength of your prescription specs is measured in dioptres by our Optometrist and is described by a set of numbers. Everyone's spectacle prescription will look different.
Once your prescription has been determined, our Optometrists will help you choose the best lens available for you to suit your personal tastes and needs in terms of lifestyle and your hobbies. The choice of lenses features single vision, bifocals, “Office” lenses or multifocal or progressive power lenses. We can provide lenses that are thin, lightweight, reflection-free and scratch-resistant. And if you are the slightest bit concerned about bright light, don’t forget that we have the latest light-sensitive Transitions lenses and anti-glare options too.
The majority of our lenses are manufactured by Carl Zeiss. They have over 125 years experience in their field and now play a leading role in the development of modern lenses. Carl Zeiss believe that innovative solutions using the latest in technology are key to ensuring that customers’ vision can again be as natural and comfortable as possible. These high-quality lenses can be enhanced with a range of different coatings to give an even better performance. These innovations really are worth the price.
Lens Materials
CR39
This is a “plastic” lens. It is a high strength polymer resin. Most lenses are plastic. It is especially important for children to only wear plastic lenses from a safety aspect.Polycarbonate
This is also a “plastic” lens. Polycarbonate lenses are thinner and lighter than conventional CR39 lenses.Transitions™
Think about how many times you move from indoors to outdoors and from sunny skies to overcast. Each and every time you do, your eyes must try to adapt to that changing light, often making it difficult to see objects clearly and making your eyes feel tired and uncomfortable.
Lens Types
Single Vision Lenses
Single vision lenses are just that, they help you with a single, particular vision correction needed – near or in the distance.Multifocal Lenses
Multifocals have 3 visual zones, however there are no visible segments – rather a smooth transition of prescription from distance through intermediate to near. This is particularly appealing to those wearers who don’t want people to know that they need reading glasses because they are older!
Customized Lenses
Moffatt Optical is proud to offer customized lenses that are completely personalized to your visual performance.Bifocal Lenses
Many people need visual correction in order to read or see near objects more clearly.High Refractive Index Lenses (HRI)
Most spectacle wearers are myopic (short sighted) and the basic property of minus lenses is that their edges are thicker than their centers.Polarized Lenses
Glare may be defined as any brightness within the visible spectrum which causes discomfort. It is caused by light that is reflected from horizontal surfaces like water, windscreens, paved roads, snow or any flat surface.Driving Lenses
In the past, clear eyewear was enough. In bright light conditions, polarized sunwear was enough. This is no longer true.Lens Coatings
Scratch-resistant coatings
No spectacle lens material – not even glass – is scratch proof. However, a lens whose front and back surfaces are treated with a clear hard coating does become more scratch resistant.Reflection-Free Coatings (ARC)
To improve both the vision through the lenses and the appearance of the glasses, a reflection-free coating is applied.Reflection-free coatings are similar to coatings found on microscope and camera lenses.
